Recapping The 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season

According to NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), in 2024, the Atlantic basin had 18 named storms, 11 of which developed into hurricanes, and 5 of those 11 hurricanes were categorized as major hurricanes with winds exceeding 178kph/111mph or greater.

The impactful and deadly 2024 hurricane season started intensely, then relaxed a bit before roaring back,” said Matthew Rosencrans, lead hurricane forecaster at NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, a division of NOAA’s National Weather Service. “Several possible factors contributed to the peak season lull in the Atlantic region. The particularly intense winds and rains over Western Africa created an environment that was less hospitable for storm development.

Hurricane Fast Facts

  1. Most hurricanes can be up to 300 miles / 582 km wide. However, the size of the hurricane will ultimately depend on the factors that influenced its creation.
  2. The eye of the hurricane can be between 20 and 40 miles / 32 and 78 kilometers wide and is a sizeable calm space surrounded by the rest of the hurricane.
  3. The strongest winds in the hurricane are located in the eyewall of the hurricane. If a hurricane passes overhead, the strongest winds will be experienced just before you enter the eye of the hurricane.
  4. Hurricanes are surrounded by rainbands, which consist of dense bands of thunderstorms with strong winds and rain. These rainbands can be up to 50 miles / 80 kilometers wide.
  5. On average, the hurricane’s right side is the most dangerous, with the strongest winds, storm surge, and tornadoes.
  6. A hurricane’s course or direction is determined by various other weather factors, including the absence or presence of weather patterns, which can make its direction of travel wild and extremely difficult to predict.
