The research team at North Carolina State University predicts that the 2025 hurricane season will align with recent averages and another year of wild weather is on the way.
Researchers from North Carolina State University have released their 2025 Atlantic hurricane season prediction. If last year’s averages are anything to go by, we’re in for another busy year of hurricanes throughout the region in 2025.
The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1st to November 30th, and researchers from NC State have predicted a hurricane season in line with recent yearly averages, with 12-15 named storms.
The NC State team isn’t the only researchers tracking Atlantic hurricane activity, with the Colorado State University research team also recently releasing their 2025 Atlantic hurricane predictions, with an above-average of 17 named storms.
The predictions cover the Atlantic Ocean Basin area that covers the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, and the entire Atlantic Ocean. Both research teams have predicted a minimum of 12 named storms, with 6-7 of those named storms having the potential to develop into hurricanes and 2-3 of those hurricanes having the potential to develop into major hurricanes, which are classified as Category 3 or higher.
To predict hurricanes, the team at NC State University looks at and evaluates over 100 years of historical weather data in the Atlantic Ocean, including hurricane positions, intensity, weather patterns, and sea-surface temperatures.
This is the 21st Atlantic Hurricane Season prediction the North Carolina State University team has released, with their first hurricane predictions starting before the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season.
In their release, Lian Xie, a marine, earth, and atmospheric sciences professor, said, “The Gulf of Mexico’s forecast is also in line with recent averages.”
The 2025 Atlantic hurricane prediction report by the team at NC State University is a joint effort between the marine and computer science departments and the earth and atmospheric sciences. The NC State University adjunct assistant professor of marine, earth, and atmospheric sciences, Xia Sun, was credited as the lead scientist on the report for this year’s forecast.
According to the Colorado State University report, there could be up to nine hurricanes and four major hurricanes potentially impacting both the continental United States and the Caribbean. Their report stated, “current La Nina conditions are likely to transition to ENSO neutral conditions in the next couple of months; however, there remains considerable uncertainty as to what the phase of ENSO will be this summer and fall.”
While sea temperatures across the central and eastern Atlantic are above average, they are still lower than at the same time last year.

Preparing for the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season
As we review the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season predictions, it’s an essential reminder that preparedness is the key to mitigating any potential safety risk. You or your family can do several critical things to prepare for the upcoming hurricane season, regardless of whether it is above or below average.
To prepare for any hurricane, gather essential supplies, create an emergency plan for you or your family, and stay updated with the latest weather updates and emergency evacuation procedures for your local area. Below is a more detailed breakdown of what to prepare for before a hurricane:
Assembling An Emergency Kit
- Food & Water – Food and water for at least three days per person, including a manual can opener and utensils.
- First Aid – A complete kit that includes antiseptic wipes, bandages, and medications.
- Light – Flashlights, including extra batteries.
- Communication – Cell phones, satellite phones, crank radio, maps, battery backups.
- Tools – Pliers, wrench, duct tape, plastic sheeting, plastic ties, and small hammer.
- Sanitation – Garbage bags, zip lock bags, moist wipes, toilet paper.
Creating An Emergency Plan
When creating an emergency plan, you should include:
- Evacuation Route – Create an evacuation route and, if possible, an alternative evacuation route that will take you to either a safe location, designated shelter, or assembly point.
- Communication Plan – Create a communication plan with family members, including how to contact each other, backup numbers, and a designated meeting or assembly point.
- Animal Care and Safety – If you have animals, ensure you plan to evacuate them to safety, along with any necessary supplies.
- Property and Security – Secure any loose items around the property, such as shutter windows, and put away anything that could become airborne.
Stay Informed and Up To Date
- Monitor All Weather Updates – Stay informed of all local weather and hurricane updates.
- Follow Evacuation Orders – If an order to evacuate is announced by local authorities, follow any instructions given.
- Check In with Your Neighbors – If you have elderly or vulnerable neighbors, check in to see if they need assistance.
Researchers Predict 12-15 Named Storms for the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season | Conclusion
The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season is shaping up to be another eventful year, so if you live in a hurricane-prone location, it’s a good idea to start preparing early. It’s always better to be safe than sorry regarding natural disaster preparedness.
